SAVANNAH, GA – March 22, 2021 – Local charter school, Savannah Classical Academy (SCA) has been awarded a $232,000 federal grant for COVID relief. SCA was one of the charter schools in Georgia and the South Eastern USA who successfully applied for federal funds. This funding was made available by the U.S. Secretary of Education to provide charter schools needed relief to lessen the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on charter school education programs and implement their reopening plans.
Under the leadership of SCA Director, Barry Lollis, the K-12 charter school reopened for in-person instruction on Wednesday, Aug. 19 to deliver the highest quality education and students’ best opportunity for successful learning outcomes. SCA closely followed guidance set forth by the Georgia Department of Education, Governor Kemp, Georgia Department of Public Health, and the Center for Disease Control including daily symptom screening, social distancing, enhanced disinfecting and sanitation protocols, and many facility upgrades including air purification systems and germicidal UV-C entryway lighting.
“I congratulate the Georgia Charter School Association for ensuring that charter schools such as ours were eligible for this grant funding.” said SCA Director Barry Lollis. “SCA met all the criteria and these funds will be dedicated to classroom instructional materials and professional development to support students, teachers, and administrators. This grant is timely as our school continues to grow and we remain committed to provide every child at SCA with a classical and academically rigorous education.”
SCA is a tuition-free, public charter school serving Chatham County students in grades K-12. The charter school is funded by the public education system but retains a charter that allows it to operate autonomously under a board of parents and community members. It is the philosophy of SCA that all students benefit from a rigorous, content-rich, education program that develops academic potential and personal character.
